In 2021, ACEM – in collaboration with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM), and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) – launched the Diploma of Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (DipPHRM). To comply with Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011, from 1 Mar 2024, this program has been renamed as Associateship in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine.

Administered by the Conjoint Committee of Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (CCPHRM), the Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Training Program is a structured, on-the-job, experiential training program that leads to the Associateship in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine. The Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine is aimed at appropriately experienced doctors who wish to work within PHRM services and actively participate in missions.

The Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Training Program requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of a six-month 1.0FTE training placement within a CCPHRM-accredited PHRM site, structured Workplace-Based Assessments (WBAs) and examinations.

Successful completion of the training program awards the Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine post-nominal. The Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine is a re-certifiable training program - holders of the Associateship in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine do not have mandated PHRM-specific CPD requirements. However, they are encouraged to actively participate in CPD activities relevant to PHRM to remain current in their knowledge and practice.

If you have any additional questions about the program, please contact the Certificate and Associateship Training Programs Team ([email protected]).
