Standards and Endorsement Committee

The Standards and Endorsement Committee (SEC) is responsible for developing and reviewing all Council of Advocacy, Practice and Partnership (CAPP) ‘standards’, the collective term for position statements, policies and guidelines. This is undertaken in line with the ACEM Standard Operating Procedure on the Development and Review of CAPP Standards (SOP 723). Like all College entities SEC ‘spills’ every two years with all positions being made vacant and subject to an expression of interest and selection process.

While SEC reviews certain standards itself, many others sit within the remit of particular College entities. For example, the review and maintenance of the ACEM Policy on Public Health  is the responsibility of the Public Health and Disaster Committee. Existing standards are subject to continual environmental scanning and are reviewed routinely every three years. The entities responsible for each standard – and their timeframe for review – are listed within those standards in the ‘Document review’ section.

New standards are developed largely in response to issues flagged by members, often at Faculty level. Following their drafting, new standards are issued for member consultation via the College’s usual communication channels, with direct feedback sought from specific subject matter experts as known.

Subject Matter Experts

Sometimes development or review of a standard does not sit neatly under a particular established group, and a call for expressions of interest (EOIs) will be issued via the College communication channels for subject matter expertise. For example, an EOI was released for subject matter experts to form a review group for the ACEM Policy on Violence in the ED (P32). Where known, subject matter experts may be approached directly for their input.

Provide Feedback Now

Review of standards is an iterative process, requiring constant intelligence from the field. Likewise, the need for new standards is often flagged by members who cannot find College advice to support them in a particular facet of their professional activities.
